P90X/Insanity/Asylum/Run Hybrid

Finally finished putting together a hybrid schedule that includes P90X, Insanity, Asylum, and running. This hybrid is set for training for half marathons. Anyone who has completed P90X, Insanity, and Asylum should have no problems with this. After all, if you can get through Game day + Overtime, a measly 5 mile run is cake :)

For those of who have been through these programs and want a plan that goes for longer or shorter distances, let me know. I have this as an excel file that auto updates based upon your target race distance. If you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know. Enjoy!

  1. I’m looking to compete in a triathlon and eventually the Ironman. Any way you could incorporate all aspects of that as well as the distances?

  2. Sounds tricky; but doable. I’ll confer with some of my friends as they do triathalons quite a bit. Hopefully I can get back to you soon :)

    • Sure. Can you specify what event(s) you would be interested in? That way I may be able to custom tailor a series of workouts that may be more specific for your needs

  3. Can you email me the spreadsheet you put together for the half marathon training? That sounds great. And I’d love to see what you were able to put together for a triathlon. That would really be a cool program.

  4. I am training for a marathon in late April and a triathlon late Spring/early Summer. I was wondering if you have schedules available for each training cycle? Thanks for any help! These are awesome!

    • I do not have plans for each cycle. I make my plans in excel files, so they can be modified for whatever event you intend to train for. So, if you want a copy of one of my excel files, feel free to message me on the blog and I will email you a copy so you can modify it to suit your purposes.

    • A lot of people have asked me about full marathons. For these plans I would keep the same Beachbody workout; but just change the running distances. For a full marathon, you would increase the amount of running according to an existing running plan (plenty can be found at http://www.runnersworld.com). You can also decrease the distances in the runs to match a 10K, 5K, etc.

  6. Hi there. I am training for a half marathon for October. I run 3-4 days per week and I have tons of workout videos that I do. I have done insanity but didn’t do it as a program because I get bored. But I bought insanity asylum and p90x2. I would like to see if I can do it as a program in addition to my running. Do you have a hybrid program for insanity asylum/p90x2/running that you could email me??

  7. Hi Brandon,
I’d like to see the excel file that you hav put together for the training of a half marathon. If you have this in a hybrid training program using a combination of Insanity, Asylum, and running that would be ideal for me.

    Let me know,
    Thanks!
    Paul

    • Hi Paul, I will send you a copy shortly. Feel free to post some comments if you have any feedback on any of my hybrids

  8. Hi, could you email me a copy of this schedule in excel format. Looks like an awesome training schedule.

    Thank you

  9. I’d love to get a copy of that Excel Spreadsheet as well. This is the only real Asylum/Running Hybrid I could find online.

  10. Brandon – I am doing the first two weeks of this starting tonight, then starting over on July 2nd. The reason being is so that I can get the soreness out before I run a 15K on July 4th. I have run two 10K the last four weeks, and I am doing a half marathon for the Air Force Marathon in September at Wright Patterson AFB in Ohio.

I was 308 pounds in November of 2010. Right now I am 217.4 and have been as low as 214.8 and all this by just running. Now is time to get my core and trim the excess to get myself ready for the half!! These first two weeks will tell me a lot about where I am and where I have to go. But once I start over again, I will be 11 weeks from my half. Looking forward to this (I say that NOW! lol) and I am aiming to lose a marathon in weight by then!!!

    Wish me luck man!

    • Glad to hear you are trying it out. Congrats on all the weight loss. Losing that much weight is NOT EASY! Keep up the good work and let me know how I can help you out.

  11. One more thing – when you have two workouts scheduled for the same day, is it better to do them back to back, or stagger them like one in the morning one in the afternoon?

    • That is up to you. A lot of times I will do them back to back. For example on my Insanity: Pure Cardio and Asylum: Strength days, I love to do them back to back just for the challenge. Also, that makes a good pair since it is cardio followed by weight lifting.

On the days when its a Beachbody workout paired with running, a lot of times I will do one in the AM and the second in the PM. Sometimes it just depends on how I feel and what my work schedule is. Bottom line, play with it and see what works for you.

If you get to those days and you are tuckered out, then just do one of the workouts and try to get to the point where you can do both in one day. As Tony Horton and Shaun T would say, “Its about getting fit, not getting hurt”

  12. I just finished my first round of Insanity after doing P90X2 at the beginning of the year. I’m hoping to start the Asylum program soon, but also need to start running to train for a Tough Mudder in September. Do you have a hybrid for just running and Asylum?

    • I don’t; but I can put one together. Keep a look out and I will have one completed soon. I should have done this sooner, especially since Asylum is probably my favorite program of them all.

  13. Excellent schedule… getting back into 1/2 marathon/marathon training after several years off. Dropped 25lbs first round of Insanity & would love to incorporate it into my 1/2 marathon training. Can you email the schedule?
    Cheers…

  14. Events with Goal Times: 800m (1:49), 1500m (4:01), 3000m (8:50) 5k (15:43)
    Current Level: 800m (1:58), 1500m (4:47),[never ran 3k], 5K (17:48)
    (5k is cross country)
Is there a schedule possible for these?
    Height: 5′ 7″ Weight: 130 lbs
I was planning to follow a hal higdon marathon base training for 1 month, followed by 2 months http://www.pponline.co.uk/encyc/0058.htm (sub-4 min mile build up training) accompanied with just P90x workouts in the afternoon.
I have never had core training, upper body training, or weight training, and barely drive my arms throughout my runs. My friends have both programs and I never participated in the exercises. Do you have a schedule that could help me out, hopefully with a bit more strength training?

    • The Hal Higdon plans are excellent and I used to use those before I started doing P90X, Insanity, etc. I do have programs that involve more strength training; but I can send you a complete list of my plans and you can pick one that suits you best. Also, I’ll send them as an excel file so you can modify the running for distances suited for your various races.

  15. Thank you for creating this. I could not find what I was looking for until I came across your website. Could you send me any templates you have in excel format?

Specifically looking for a strength/Insanity template and a Half Marathon/Insanity template. Thanks in advance!

      • I have individual Insanity-Half Marathon and Asylum-Half Marathon plans. You can get both of those and then alternate every other week of the two plans to have a good Insanity-Asylum-Half Marathon plan.

  16. I am getting ready to do Pat’s. Run in about 2 months – 4.2 miles on 4/20/13. I can easily run 2 miles and I just bought insanity in hopes that it will help my endurance – I’d also like to drop some weight. I’m currently 5’4″ and 135 lbs and at least 30% body fat. Can you give me some advice about the best way to train for this event using insanity and incorporating running?

    • I’d love to help you out. Since the race is 4.2 miles, it will be approximately 1/3 the distance of a half marathon. So, the simplest way to integrate Insanity into your running would be to use the Insanity-Half marathon training schedule; but for every run on the plan, divide the distance by three and use that as your training runs.

  17. Your hybrid schedule looks thoroughly amazing…I have to look good for husband when he returns from deployment in 7 months. I plan on using your schedule to help me achieve the look I am after. Please email this spreadsheet to me. Thanks so much for your time!

  18. Happy Friday,

I like your hybrid calendar alot, being an avid athlete by completing multiple half marathons, 3 marathons all the Beachbody programs from P90X-Insanity Asylum II. I love running because I can virtually eat alot more and stay thinner, but my Fiance’ prefers some tone and muscle which was my main goal throughout college and I love having big muscle but it’s terribly hard to keep that up as a 30 year old young businessman trying to make his way up in the corporate world. My family genetics are very bad and almost 70% of my extended family is very overweight, so I have to work hard at staying in shape. I usually work about 50 hours a week. Therefore, my workouts are usually in the mornings around 5:00am then off to work. When running I clock in about 40+ miles a week. I try to hit the gym during lunch but it’s tough. My thoughts are to run 3 days a week and then do a weight oriented video from beachbody on the other 3 days. Any suggestions or advice on how as a soon to be husband, corporate businessman and an avid athlete to stay thin and muscular.

    • I definitely know your pain. I also work a lot (always 50+ hours a week) and I have my family obligations to tend to when I am not working. Like you, I have to do my workouts early in the morning just to get them in. Also like you, most of my family is overweight. My advice for staying thin AND muscular is to focus on your diet. Working out is great; but sometimes its a person’s diet that seals the deal. For example, when I first started doing my Beachbody+running hybrids I used to eat a lot (not always the best food) because I felt I was working out so much. But I found that over time when I stuck to one of the Beachbody diet plans or The Michi Ladder Plan (which I got from Beachbody) then it was much much easier to stay thin; but not lose any muscle. So I recommend that you really focus on your diet. Your plan to run 3 days a week and to weight/strength training for the 3 other days is good and that is essentially what I do. So keep doing that and do the “hard” work of modifying your diet and I am sure that you’ll be amazed with the results.

Also, blessings to you and your soon-to-be wife. Marriage is a beautiful thing.

Feel free to email me (DrBHenderson@beachbodycoach.com) if you have any specific diet related questions.

  19. Hi, please can you send me that excel file? Thanks. Until January I have schedules to do, but in April I wanna run a marathon, so there are three months of time to excercise. Your are the first I’ve found with combined schedule – asylum (insanity, p90x, etc.) and running at the same time. Other plans were only for one of these things. So this is great, I was scared of dropping one of the plan and doing only running to accomplish the marathon.

And I’d like to ask one more question – one day (after I accomplish iron man or long triatlon), I will have muscles of my dreams etc., and simply I won’t want to train so hard as when muscles were building, I’ll just want to stand in form – so what to do at this point? The muscles will be gone after several (or more) months withnout training, won’t they? Thanks.

    • You can download the excel file from Google Drive. On the link posted on my hybrid page, it will take you to the file hosted on Google drive and you can download it from there.

  20. Hi, I’m very interested in following this hybrid schedule for half marathon training. Thank you so much for taking the time to makes these available to us runners! I just completed a half yesterday in which I did just Insanity and running. I want to add more muscle this time around, so I like the look of this training. I have a question, what is “Insanity: U.W.T”? I can’t seem to find that in my DVD set. Also, are the ones with a
“+” after them from P90X+? I’m wondering because my P90X set is old and did not come with “plus” so I’m wondering if I can just use one of the P90X or P90X2 workouts instead. (I do have both of those sets) Thanks in advance for you time.

  21. Hi,

I come from Belgium. It’s a small country in Europe.
My English is very poor but I’ll try my best.
In a couple of months i’ll be running an unique 10km run. During this run there will be 15 obstacles. (running in water, mud, mountains, rope climbing, etc…)
This is the site to the event : http://www.sport.be/spartacusrun/2013/nl/

Can you help me out with a shedule.
    Thx a lot
    greetz

    • Looks groovy. My advice would be to follow one of the Asylum hybrids I have. the calisthenics that are built into those programs will be a great help to this type of race. Just set the max distance for your runs at 6 miles (~10K)
