Research Experience

  • 2011-Current. National Collaborative Drug Discovery and Development Group (NCDDDG)

The NCDDDG group is a collaborative effort among a subgroup of Henry Lester’s lab at the California Institute of Technology (Pasadena, CA), Michael Mark’s group at the University of Colorado (Boulder, CO) and a drug company, Targacept (Winston Salem, NC). This group utilizes a multitude of scientific disciplines in the effort to design drugs that specifically target α6* and α4* nAChRs as potential treatment strategies for nicotine addiction and Parkinson’s disease.

  • 2011-Current. Postdoctoral Research Fellow. Sponsor, Henry A. Lester, California Institute of Technology, Division of Biology.

My current project focuses on characterizing how menthol in cigarettes may exacerbate addiction to nicotine.

  • 2006-2011. Graduate Research. Advisor, Dennis B. McKay, The Ohio State University, Division of Pharmacology, College of Pharmacy.

Project focused on the discovery of novel therapeutic molecules for the treatment of nicotine addiction by employing a multidisciplinary approach including: pharmacology, molecular biology, computational chemistry, and chemistry.

  • 2007-2011. Nicotinic Receptor Drug Discovery Group (NRDDG).

The NRDDG was a collaborative effort amount pharmacologists and chemists to identify novel noncompetitive antagonists for nicotine cessation. This included the laboratories of Dennis McKay, Rob Coleman, Chenglong Li, Karl Werbovetz (The Ohio State University) and Steve Bergmeier (Ohio University).

  • 2004-2006. Analytical Chemist.  M.A.R.C Laboratory, Columbus Ohio. Supervisor, John O. Olesik.

Responsible for quantifying trace level substances using two forms of inductively coupled plasma (ICP) instruments: 1) mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) and 2) optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES).

  • 2004-2006. Undergraduate Research.  Advisor, John O. Olesik, the Ohio State University, department of Chemistry, College of Math and Physical Sciences.

Studied and catalogued the reactions of Ion-Molecule chemistry using a Dynamic Reaction Cell Mass Spectrometer (ICP-DRC-MS).  Studies were completed using many forms of reaction gasses: methane, nitrogen, ammonia, and oxygen.  Additional work focused on reducing molecular overlaps that are common with plasma spectrometers as well as interferences that arise from matrix effects.
